Hi there! This week we’ve been talking common problems salon owners are having right now… doubt, fear and tough business conversations.
I have compiled together everything we have talked about on tough business conversations on social media… including a blog with tips for productive, inclusive and beneficial team meetings and videos on how I’ve been feeling as a salon owner lately.
Plus, check out this article I wrote about how salons are responding and adapting to Covid-19. Read it HERE.
Enjoy!
Are my feelings valid?
The things that can trip us up most are our fears and doubts.
- What if we can’t open for another month?
- What if I get sick from COVID-19?
- What if my team doesn’t want to return to work?
- What if the customers go elsewhere?
Doubts, fears and then more fears and doubts… have you been feeling like this lately?
What are you doing when these fears come up?
Shaming yourself, hanging onto the fears and letting them run amuck in your head, or having a quiet chat with yourself about how fear is just false evidence appearing real… like all the gurus and enlightened folk tell you.
These uncertain times are real. We can’t hide from them and for all of us, we will react differently. Judging others over their reactions is just plain crazy. Who knows what motivates them and what life path they have followed that causes them to react the way they do. Being in survival mode can make us behave in ways that may be unrecognisable to our usual selves.
One thing I do focus on in my darker moments is the fact that I have survived adversity before and thrived
I know talking about going from surviving to thriving right now may seem a stretch, but I do put my attention there. I prepare what I can and then get present.
I get most stressed when I think of my team. How do we get them match fit? What if we need to reduce wages and even let some go? Thriving for us may not be surviving in the short term for them.
How do you handle these tough business conversations?
I use the Simon Sinek FBI Framework…
- How I FEEL
- The BEHAVIOUR I want to shift
- And the IMPACT it is having
Salon Owner Conversations
How to have tough business conversations with yourself
Tough business conversations are something that lately I have had more of than usual… especially with myself! It helps to have a framework for these so an outcome is reached and it just doesn’t go around and around in circles.
In my new video, I take you through some examples of the Simon Sinek FBI Framework. If you find yourself having to have difficult conversations with others or yourself, this will be helpful.
Fear and Doubt
Fear and doubt are common feelings, especially in the middle of the night! Business owners the world over are facing a lot of uncertainty about the future and the best gift you can give yourself to combat this is presence.
Being an empowered leader right now is more important than ever. Vision, leadership, courage and presence are what will steer your team and your business through this. It is what successful salon business owners will be focusing on.
How to have tough business conversations with your team
Defensive reactions are common when you are calling people out on their behaviour. Salon owners really struggle with this and for good reason.

But your team will be feeling it just like you… uncertainty and stress, even if it feels like they are having more a holiday at the moment! The time will come when the reality of their situation will be a smack in the face.
So, it’s important to keep connected with your team and have regular team meetings. These can be virtual at the moment if your salon is shut, but you will need to have them nonetheless.
In this week’s blog, I talk about how to get the most out of your team meetings… how to make them productive, inclusive and beneficial for everyone involved. Click HERE to read it.
