Do you go to the dentist and say, oh, I’ll just Do you go to the dentist and say, oh, I’ll just have half my teeth cleaned today? Do you say I can’t afford 2 fillings? Can you just do half and I’ll come back another time for the rest? Why is it then that customers come to your salon saying to you that they only want a few foils, no treatment or dry today!! Or can I just have a cut…no wash! Colour but no blowdry… Or refuse to buy products that support the work you have done to their hair to keep the colour locked in or help keep the smooth and shiny. Do you refuse to use toothpaste or only buy the cheapest toothpaste and toothbrush if your dentist recommends something you need to keep the whitening you’ve had done last longer? I understand that sometimes customers are confronting, push boundaries and feel they can control all these aspects of having a service done at our salons. But do you go out for a meal and dictate how your meal is prepared and decide what you are willing to pay for? You don’t get a reduced price if you say no mayo.. Or leave out the onion! Salon pricing has fallen into the trap of being overly controlled by what the customer feels they want to have and what they are prepared to pay for. But the biggest catch is they still want the full result. They have massive expectations and desires when it comes to how they want their hair to look. How are you supposed to get that glossy smooth hair for them if they refuse to use the products you recommended? Why should they expect to cut the service in half and limit what you can do to save them money when you know you can’t create what they want unless they have the full service? I’ve had over 400 students in my workshops and c I’ve had over 400 students in my workshops and courses and a lot of them came to me because they weren’t attracting enough good so-called ‘dream’ customers into their business, not creating enough revenue from the customers they had … some had not enough customers at all and were going broke.. Here are the two things almost all of them had in common. 1)They felt just attracting more new clients was the answer. Why? Because it’s the only way they knew to fill their empty spaces. But it wasn’t working. They saw other salons successfully booking up their salon with great social media and thought they needed to do the same. But they were missing the crucial piece of the puzzle. They didn’t focus on WHO they were attracting I easily helped them overcome this by shifting their focus to a Social Engagement style of attraction and retention. It’s how successful salons actually grow their businesses. Successful attraction and retention is a lot of what you don’t see. Just like you only see the tip of an iceberg… Alright, let’s move on to problem #2. 2) They were making decisions and taking action based on assumptions and interpretations of data and metrics that were not telling them the full story. Sending them off in the wrong direction. In other words, they were focusing on vanity metrics or data that hid real profit problems in their businesses. For example, when the salon owner tried to create a new service or price an existing service they were going off data that encouraged them to just work out all the costs and then add the profit they felt was right. This is a backward approach. When you rework existing pricing you are more likely to have to increase prices again or lose customers because you get it wrong. Now, these are just two of the most common mistakes and there are more.
